"Never Call Us Lady Composers": Gendered Receptions in the New York Composers' Forum, 1935–1940

During a 1937 New York Composers" forum concert, composer Marion Bauer was asked to explain the scarcity of women composers. Bauer replied: "There are a great many more than you think. What many women composers need is encouragement and an opportunity to work and to be taken seriously… . Just think of us as composers and never call us lady composers."
