Howard Hanson's Merry Mount, op. 31, his only opera, was commissioned
by the metropolitan opera and premiered on February 10, 1934, to both
a house and national radio broadcast audience. it received fifty curtain
calls that day, a met premiere record that remains to this day, and went
on to receive five more performances with three run-outs that season.
Tullio Serafin conducted those performances, which featured the baritone
Lawrence Tibbett in the leading role of Bradford and Gota Ljungberg as
Marigold. The met never revived it.
