Volume 26 • Number 1

Spring 2008

Selected Correspondence of Charles Ives. Edited by Tom C. Owens. Berkeley: University of California Press, 2007. ISBN 978-0-520-24606-5 (hardcover). 410 pages. $45.00.

This book presents a large and well-chosen collection of Charles Ives's correspondence in dialogue with a wide range of documents from friends, family, and collaborators. More than 450 letters to and from Ives appear with scholarly commentary by Owens, who also compiled and edited several of Ives's letters as one section of Charles Ives and His World in 1996. Like the earlier publication, Selected Correspondence of Charles Ives combines valuable research material that offers a more nuanced portrait of the composer. Indeed, this new volume has the potential to open another stage in the complex history of Ives scholarship, itself originating in Ives's own efforts at self-construction and revealed in these letters.
